5 Tips to Lose the Fear of Speaking English

A few days ago, on our Facebook page, I was asked to give some tips here on the blog that are useful for those who want to lose the fear of speaking English. Intrigued by the subject, I decided to ask three questions:

Are you afraid to speak English?

Why do you have this fear?

What do you do to overcome this fear?

I received numerous responses. In most of them, people said that they are afraid of speaking wrong, afraid of saying something nonsense, afraid of being judged ( evaluated ) by the other person, afraid of forgetting the words, afraid of making mistakes in the pronunciation, etc. There were several responses. Interestingly, no one answered the third question: What do you do to overcome this fear?

So, I decided to take into account my experience ( as an apprentice, teacher, author, and researcher ) and share with you some tips that might help. But, remember that these tips will only be effective if you put them into practice. It's no use saying “ I'm going to do this ” and never do it. It's also no use saying “ this is cool ” and not doing anything. Saying something like “ this tip is good ” and not taking action doesn't bring results. That is, put them into practice, otherwise, nothing will happen. You may also be interested to learn about English irregular verbs

Below, therefore, are five simple tips for those who really want to lose the fear of speaking English.

5 Tips to Lose the Fear of Speaking English1st Tip – Read texts ( or even sentences ) aloud. Get used to hearing your own voice in English. This helps you improve pronunciation, memorize words, expressions, sentences, etc., and hear yourself speaking English without finding it awkward;

2nd Tip – When possible, save yourself when reading a text. Choose a short, easy text (it could be a dialogue from a book, a paragraph from a text ) and read it over and over again on different days. Record your every reading and compare the readings from the first moment to the last. Read and record as many times as you think necessary and see how you improve with each reading;

3rd Tip – Create dialogues between two people and play the role of each one of them. You must write the text first and practice it out loud afterward. This helps you to think in English, to structure sentences ( grammar and vocabulary ), and to overcome that anxiety when speaking English;

4th Tip – Keep your mind thinking in English. When in a queue, waiting room, restaurant, bus, etc., think English. Describe people's clothes, describe people, mentally repeat license plates ( letters and numbers ) in English, describe the paths you pass in English, etc. Anyway, do everything to keep your brain active with the English language. This helps you expand your English vocabulary;

5th Tip – When learning a grammatical structure, write down some examples and rewrite them so that your brain gets used to the structure. Then rewrite the same example, but changing a few words. This helps you to diversify the way the grammatical structure is used and makes the structure better anchored in the brain. This is the Lexical Approach thing: learning the usage of grammar in practice.

These are 05 simple tips. I believe you can start putting them into practice today. Don't think they are difficult. In fact, it's all a matter of starting to do at least one of them. Over time you get used to it and soon start putting another tip into practice. Your fear of speaking English gradually diminishes, you gain more confidence and, certainly, you will develop the fluency you so desire.
